About

My name's Ethan, I'm a doctoral researcher in philosophy at the University of Edinburgh with over six years of tutoring experience. In my time as an educator, I've had the privilege to share the subjects I love with hundreds of students. It's been my experience that teaching and research go together - the classroom is the best excuse to bring knowledge to life and see it take form in someone else. Seeing the moment when that argument, interpretation or metaphor "clicks" for someone else is as satisfying now as it was for me when I first experienced those lightbulb moments.

I first got into philosophy because it gave words to the thoughts I knew intuitively but couldn't vocalise, but with time I've realised that this is the power of the humanities more broadly - it's exactly what poems, novels and social theories do, and it's also why these fragments of our culture are so important. Coincidentally, that's also (in part) what education is about - finding the words to understand ourselves, the world around us and hopefully live richer lives in light of that understanding. That's the love of knowledge I want to share.
