How I Work

Every student approaches a text differently, and I tailor sessions accordingly. For younger students preparing for GCSE or National 5, we focus on building reliable analytical habits - how to move from plot summary to active interpretation, how to deploy quotations with precision, and how to write under timed conditions without freezing.

For A-Level, Highers and International Baccalaureate, sessions go deeper: close, perceptive and granular reading, situating texts in their context, comparative thinking, and the kind of interpretive confidence that helps you reach the top bands.

Each session is tailored to the relevant exam board and qualification. Across exam boards, however, sessions typically combine close reading of your set texts, structured practice in developing interpretations, and direct feedback on your written work — so you leave each session with concrete progress.

Sessions are, therefore, relaxed but purposeful, interactive and collaborative - we will interrogate texts, deploy key terminology and practice exam technique together - and I will give you honest, constructive feedback throughout.

Sessions are held online or in person within the City of Edinburgh. Sessions are typically one hour or two hours long.
